SharingSpree Announces Seattle Launch

SharingSpree.com, the daily deal site that celebrated its first birthday just last month, has announced that it is launching in Seattle, making the Emerald City the fourth market for the Portland, Oregon deals provider.
Launched in January 2011, Sharing Spree bases its business model, in part, on giving back to local non-profits and schools. Thus far the site has donated $245,000 to non-profits and schools. Non-profits in Seattle that will benefit include University of Washington Alumni Association, Make-A-Wish Foundation®, American Diabetes Association and Autism Speaks.

Seattle’s green jobs program still a bust

Nearly two years ago, the City of Seattle received $20 million in stimulus money to fund a green jobs program that promised to create 2,000 jobs. The program now admits its jobs estimate will likely never be met. Only 16 jobs have been created by Community Power Works so far, though the city says paychecks have gone out to 226 people for work done on the project. The program offers home energy audits to make homes more efficient and it offers weatherization.
It promised 2,000 homes would be upgraded over the three years it was receiving money. So far, only 71 homes have been improved.

Seattle Woman ‘Marries’ Building

A Seattle woman recently exchanged one-side wedding vows with an abandoned warehouse she “married” to save from demolition. In December, Babylonia Aivaz and 16 friends occupied the building to protest a planned apartment complex on the site.
“Gentrification is happening,” Aivaz told Seattle TV station KOMO. “It’s a serious issue that affects poor people and especially people of color and this is just the beginning of the fight.”
